The Turk's cap cactus bears small, carrot-shaped red fruits that are edible. Even the experts do not yet know to which species Bonaire’s Melocactus belong; various species which look very much alike exist on the island. When flowering, the cactus starts to grow a felt-like pillow on top of which appear small pink flowers. The pillow grows bigger with each succeeding flowering period, and older cacti end up with quite a chimney on their "head" (the Turk's cap). Melocactus may not be taken from the wild, it is prohibited by law.
